A helicopter rescue crew dropped a smoke flare to help water police find two people clinging to the side of their overturned boat in Australia.

RACQ CQ Rescue, in Queensland, spotted the pair near Airlie Beach clicking to hull of their overturned six-metre boat near Gloucester Island.

The Mackay-based rescue helicopter was tasked by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) one September afternoon.

The rescue helicopter dropped a smoke flare and radioed the Queensland Water Police boat that was en route from Bowen.

The helicopter crew decided the safest option was to provide close watch overhead until the water police vessel arrived. The two occupants were not hurt, although they had been in the water for more than an hour.
