Flare turns exercise into real rescue

Bridlighton and Flamborough

Yorkshire lifeboat crews went from an exercise to a real-life rescue after a jet-skier set off a flare.

RNLI lifeboat crease from Bridlington and Flamborough had just finished a training exercise in the bay when they were asked to investigate a red flare siting.

They searched off the coast of Wilsthorpe, south of Bridlington, and found the jet-skier and the craft, which had suffered engine failure, reports the Bridlington Free Press.

The Inshore lifeboat crew handed the casualty and craft over to the team once ashore and suitable safety advice was given.

A Bridlington Lifeboat spokesperson says, "The incident was reported to the UK Coastguard resulting in the inshore lifeboat going to assist a jet ski that had suffered engine problems off the coast near Wilsthorpe.

"Our grateful thanks to the member of public who alerted us. Please remember if you see anything that gives you concern at sea or along the coast please ring 999 and ask for the coastguard."
